This course introduces students to the New York City Fire Code and Fire Department Rules including their organization and terminology, along with Fire Code construction site provisions and all construction site fire safety requirements. Topics covered will include fire safety plans, inspections, and record-keeping, training on fire extinguishers, testing fire protection equipment, hot work requirements, and industry best practices based on other regulatory requirements like the Building Code and OSHA.

Training Requirements for Construction Site Fire Safety Manager Training

Candidates for the New York City Fire Department’s (FDNY) Construction Site Fire Safety Manager (CSFSM) S-56 Certificate of Fitness (C of F) Exam are required to complete a CSFSM training course. Applicants have 1 year from the date of completing the course to apply to take the S-56 exam with the FDNY. If they do not apply within a year they are required to retake the entire course. The Fire Code requires that whenever there is hot work (gas torch, etc.) operation taking place at a major construction site, a fire watch should be done by a person holding an F-60 Certificate of fitness (C of F). The F-60 C of F is also required when hot work operations will be conducted in an occupied building or when repairs are being done in an office building.

This seminar prepares students for the computer-based F-60 Fireguard for Torch Operations C of F exam. This hybrid course consists of both a virtual, instructor-led lecture and hands-on/practical component and provides students with an overview of OSHA and DOB policies, procedures, and suspended scaffold standards with a special emphasis on recognition and prevention of hazardous conditions. Some topics will include instructions on how to visually inspect suspended scaffold equipment, basic scaffold components, and methods of assembling/disassembling them. Students will also participate in hands-on exercises in which they will be responsible for presenting, building, and using various scaffolding and rigging applications.

The instructor will assess students to determine if each student is capable of applying rope knots, terminating wire rope, building a block and tackle system, and operating scaffold hoist motor and each student will independently complete a multiple-choice final exam.
