During this course students will be discussing changes and updates to OSHA and New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) policies, procedures and supported scaffold standards. Students will also have a chance to share jobsite experiences and opinions about new supported scaffold systems and solutions. This knowledge will help workers to properly prepare for and participate in supported scaffold installation/removal process.

The instructor will assess students to determine if each student is capable of applying rope knots used to rig scaffold equipment, properly install/maintain fall protection systems, safely build supported scaffold systems and walking/working scaffold platforms and immediately prior to the end of the course, students will independently participate in a multiple choice final exam.

Instructors will demonstrate safe methods of installation, removal and modification of different types of supported scaffolds using OSHA regulations, DOB standards and good work practice as a guide. Some topics covered during the course will include major scaffold components, importance of proper pre-planning, worker training, and how to read scaffold design drawings. Throughout the course, students will also participate in hands on exercises in which they will build and dismantle supported scaffolds, apply various knots on the rope and demonstrate ability to apply basic rigging techniques.

During this course students will explore New York City Construction Codes and OSHA Regulations as it pertains to the supervision of suspended scaffolds. Participants will learn the most current suspended scaffold standards, and will include guidance on how to read scaffold design drawings, how to verify the fitness of the rigging crew, properly train workers on related hazards, and also how to identify and respond to emergency situations. This course will include a hands-on portion where students will learn about and apply rope knots, terminate wire rope, build a block and tackle system, effectively install fall protection systems, and inspect/maintain different types of scaffold hoist motors.

Hands-on assessment will be made by the instructor to determine if each student is capable of performing the above mentioned scaffolding and rigging applications. Each student is required to independently complete a multiple-choice final exam.
