Emergencies can create a variety of hazards for workers in the impacted area. Preparing before an emergency incident plays a vital role in ensuring that employers and workers have the necessary equipment, know where to go, and know how to keep themselves safe when an emergency occurs.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Disaster Site Worker Outreach Training Program is intended to provide necessary training to workers who provide skilled support (e.g. utility, demolition, debris removal, or heavy equipment operation) or clean-up services in response to natural and man-made disasters. All workers at disaster sites need to be aware of the differences between disaster sites and regular construction or demolition worksites and be able to inspect, don, and doff air-purifying respirators. This training is also intended to raise awareness that pre-incident training is essential to ensure worker safety and health in response to disasters.

The National Incident Management System (NIMS), personal protective equipment including specific respiratory protection requirements, and the importance of decontamination and traumatic stress will be discussed in detail. The training in interactive, with opportunity for attendees to practice their expanded knowledge through discussion, group exercises, and demonstrations within the safety of a controlled environment.
